The Situation
A low pressure system lies stalled to the west of New Zealand today, bringing a northerly flow to the upper North Island, and strong easterlies over the lower North Island and the South Island. The low pressure system weakens on Wednesday as it approaches the South Island.
Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow
An approaching low brings heavy rain and severe gales to central New Zealand.
Northland south to Taranaki, Taumarunui, Taihape and Bay of Plenty
Showers, some heavy with thunderstorms possible, especially tomorrow afternoon and evening.
Gisborne
Showers, clearing this afternoon. Isolated showers tomorrow afternoon
Whanganui to Wellington, also Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa
Occasional showers, possibly heavy, mostly clearing this evening. Showers becoming widespread again tomorrow morning until evening, with thunderstorms possible from afternoon.
Buller, Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury and Otago
Periods of rain, with heavy falls in Nelson and Marlborough, clearing to isolated showers in Canterbury and Otago later tomorrow.
Grey and Westland
Periods of rain, becoming persistent and possibly heavy tomorrow evening.
Southland and Fiordland
Cloudy periods. Isolated showers from tomorrow afternoon.
Chatham Islands
Periods of rain, possibly heavy until tomorrow morning.

Thursday
North Island: Scattered showers, mainly in the north and west, maybe heavy. South Island: Showers, mainly inland, some heavy. However, rain in Nelson possibly heavy.
Friday
North Island: Showers, mainly afternoon and evening, possibly heavy. South Island: Showers, mainly inland in the afternoon and evening, maybe heavy.
Saturday
North Island: Showers, in the north, but rain for a time, with heavy falls possible. A few showers in the south. South Island: Isolated showers in the west and south. Showers elsewhere.
And at the Chathams
Periods of rain, possibly heavy, clearing late Thursday then cloudy periods and the odd shower. Strong easterlies easing and turning northerly Wednesday, changing westerly on Friday and strengthening on Saturday.
