Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Thursday
The Situation
Strong cold southerlies associated with a deep low near the Chatham Islands affect most of the country today and tomorrow. Meanwhile, a front from the Tasman Sea moves onto the upper North Island late today and then moves away to the east on Monday.
Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow
Northland and Auckland
Isolated showers. Rain spreading south tonight, possibly heavy with thunderstorms and hail, easing to showers tomorrow morning, clearing by evening.
Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, Waitomo, Bay of Plenty and Taupo
Partly cloudy today with isolated evening showers about Waikato and Waitomo. Occasional rain tomorrow, clearing by afternoon.
Gisborne to Wairarapa
Cloudy periods. Showers spreading north tomorrow from late morning.
Taranaki to Wellington, including Taumarunui and Taihape
Partly cloudy. A few showers for Taranaki, Whanganui and Manawatu, spreading elsewhere tomorrow.
Marlborough except the Kaikoura Coast, Nelson, and Buller to Fiordland
Fine.
Kaikoura Coast, Canterbury and coastal Otago
Periods of rain. Snow to 400 metres, lifting to 700 metres this evening. Snow then clearing tomorrow morning.
Inland Otago, also Southland
Cloudy periods with showers, becoming isolated tomorrow.
Chatham Islands
Rain, easing late tomorrow. Gale northerlies changing southwest tomorrow morning.

Tuesday
North Island: Rain developing in the north with heavy falls. Partly cloudy elsewhere, with isolated showers. South Island: Isolated showers in the east, clearing. Rain in the west later.
Wednesday
North Island: Rain in the north and west, with heavy falls, easing. Showers elsewhere, clearing in the east. South Island: Rain or showers for most, easing in the east later.
Thursday
North Island: Partly cloudy in the east. A few showers elsewhere. South Island: Isolated showers in the south. Occasional rain elsewhere.
Friday
North Island: Rain or showers for most but isolated showers in the east. South Island: Showers, clearing in the north and east.
And at the Chathams
Partly cloudy with a few showers, turning to rain for a time Wednesday, clearing Thursday. Rain developing again Friday. Strong southerlies, easing Tuesday. Gale northerlies developing Wednesday. Changing southerly on Thursday, turning northerly on Friday.
