Defending champion Caroline Powell of New Zealand was forced to withdraw her horse just before the start of the Badminton Horse Trials in England.

Greenacre Special Cavalier, last year's winning horse, was pulled just an hour before the dressage because Powell said it was not feeling quite right.

The pair won at their last start three weeks ago.

In 2024, Powell became just the second New Zealand woman to win the prestigious equestrian event.

Powell had another horse in this year's competition.

After the first day of dressage, British rider Tom McEwen was on top of the standings.

New Zealand's Tim Price was 15th, Dan Jocelyn is 21st, Jonelle Price 24th, Joe Meyer 35th and Jesse Campbell 39th.

Those to ride on the second day of dressage were Lauren Innes, Tayla Mason, Powell and Price (on his second mount).
