The Professional Firefighters Union vice-president Martin Campbell said the accelerator on the truck from the Grey Lynn station had snapped.

He said the truck would have been the first to arrive at the fire at Sarsfield Street, Herne Bay, if it hadn't broken down.

A Fire and Emergency (FENZ) spokesperson said staff received a callout to a fire on Sarsfield Street in Herne Bay about 6.20pm this evening.

The fire, which has now been contained, was in a domestic dwelling currently under construction.

The spokesperson said a truck had to be called in from Takapuna to take its place.

Two other crews responded from Auckland and another from Parnell.

The fire truck has now been towed.
