It is going to be a wet end to the school holidays for much of the country.
The silver lining is on Friday morning, there were no severe weather warnings in force ahead of the last weekend before school goes back.
But that does not mean it will not be raining.
"There will be bands of rain passing over the North and top of the South Islands," MetService said on X (formerly Twitter).
"In behind the showers, there is the risk of squally thunderstorms and hail for Northland and Auckland from evening."

In a video update on the MetService website, one forecaster said a low pressure system was coming in from the Tasman Sea, bringing rain across the North Island and upper parts of the South.
"Most of the day stays dry but in the afternoon, in the evening we see a north-easterly is developing for eastern Otago, as well as cloud and drizzle. Cloud continues to increase throughout the day and those northeasterlies will be noticeable through Christchurch this afternoon.
"A bit of drizzle in the capital this morning, otherwise elsewhere in the afternoon and evening, things take a right turn, but nobody keeps daytime temperatures."
Heavy rain was possible in the evening across Bay of Plenty and other parts of the upper North Island, they said.
"Rain is going to be on the cards for the majority of the day, getting a little heavier in the afternoon."
It was a "very similar" story for Sunday, they said, with showers continuing into Monday, when school goes back.
