In a marathon session on Thursday, Wellington City councillors voted to save many treasured community facilities from the chopping block.
Wellington City Council met to make key spending decisions on Khandallah Pool, the Begonia House, water infrastructure and cycleways for its long-term budget.
Tough calls needed to be made after the council last year voted not to free up cash by selling its airport shares.
It meant the council had to go back to the drawing board with its long term plan to cut spending.
Councillors voted to save the Khandallah swimming pool and the Begonia House, which had strong community campaigns.
They also voted to create a co-council owned water entity.
The city's cycle lane budget was cut, while the unfinished Karori Events Centre will be offered back to its trust.
