Businesses near a blaze an industrial warehouse in Christchurch say an acrid smell of burnt plastic remains, despite no visible smoke.

Two fire crews remained outside the warehouse overnight, monitoring what Fire and Emergency described as a deep-seated fire.

Fire and Emergency was alerted to the blaze in the suburb of Bromley shortly before 1pm on Monday.

The fire engulfed a warehouse and spread thick smoke across the city, but firefighters managed to contain it before it spread to any other buildings.

Workers nearby said the road around the building remained closed on Tuesday morning and a 'plasticky' smell permeated the area.

Fire and Emergency had urged residents to keep windows and doors closed overnight due to the cold air pushing the smoke down.

On Tuesday morning, shift manager Simon Lyford said the blaze would take some time to put out.

It had been too risky to put any firefighters inside the warehouse on Monday night, he said.
