British comedian Jimmy Carr is returning to New Zealand in 2026 and is kicking off his tour in Invercargill.
The last time Carr was in New Zealand, he mocked New Plymouth and described Central Hawke's Bay residents as "inbred".
But Invercargill City Councill manager of venues and events Jason Wade isn't concerned about Carr's brand of humour upsetting locals in the deep south.
"It goes without saying. That's his comedy and I think people would expect that anyway. I guess it's designed to create a reaction, and often it does."
This won't be Carr's first visit to Invercargill, and last time he was warmly received by locals.
"The last time he was down in Invercargill, a few years ago, he sold out, so we expect the same thing.
"He'll be at the fabulous Civic Theatre down here. We're really looking forward to it."
Wade believes Invercargill punches above its weight in terms of international acts visiting the city and, in tough times, having a good laugh can be great for the community.
"It'll be great for the local accommodation and hospitality and all that carry on.
"But also, it's great for the community, especially when things are a bit down and out. Having a bit of a laugh is always good to improve that well-being element."
Jimmy Carr Laughs Funny is touring New Zealand from the 7th - 28th of January 2026, beginning at Invercargill's Civic Theatre.
