A yacht with 1000 litres of diesel on board sunk in Canterbury's Cass Bay overnight.

The 12.5-metre boat had a dog on board that was recovered safely and returned to its owner.

The Canterbury Regional Council said a response was underway to minimise the impacts to the environment.

It said 1000 litres of diesel contained in tanks was on board the yacht, as well as about 40 litres of hydraulic fluid, but no significant spill had been observed.

Floating debris was being recovered from surrounding bays, and the regional council asked members of the public to avoid touching debris.

Canterbury was lashed by heavy rain and strong winds overnight.

Nearly 100mm of rain fell in Banks Peninsula over 12 hours while wind gusts reached 110 kilometres an hour.
