Police in Auckland have arrested two people after tracking a fleeing vehicle across the city early on Friday morning.

Officers tracked a vehicle with a broken quarter window from Mount Albert Road at about 4am.

The vehicle fled after it was ordered it to stop, and continued until it was spiked.

Police said it slowed down enough for a passenger to get out, and they were was quickly arrested.

The vehicle was pursued by police after driving on the wrong side of the road before stopping.

Its driver fled on foot across the southern motorway before being caught by the police dog unit.

Police said a 17-year-old was expected to appear in Auckland Youth Court charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, failing to remain, dangerous driving, possession of offensive weapon, and possession of an imitation firearm.

Auckland City West Area Prevention Manager, Inspector Wayne Kitcher, said it was incredibly lucky no one was injured.

"Other road users should not expect to have their safety put at risk as it was last night, it's completely unacceptable," he said in a statement.

Kitcher said they found an imitation firearm and machete during a search of the vehicle.
