The two volunteer firefighters injured by a falling veranda in Te Pohue Hawke's Bay on Thursday have been released from hospital.

Five people, including two firefighters helping a neighbour in a private capacity, were injured when the mechanism lowering a veranda into place on a portable home broke, causing the structure to fall on them.

Two people had serious injuries and three had moderate injuries, with one of the people being flown to Hawke's Bay Hospital in Hastings.

The group were helping their neighbour to erect a portable cabin at the Te Pohue campground, where it had been delivered this week.

Fire and Emergency told RNZ that the volunteer firefighters were released from Hawke's Bay Hospital yesterday and that they are continuing to support them and their families.
