A Manukau barrister and youth justice advocate says police are wrong to force young people to have their photos taken when they haven't commited an offence.
Police in Wairarapa have admitted to illegally taking images of some young people, after RNZ alerted them to multiple reports of officers stopping and photographing young Māori on the street.
Wellington police district commander, Corrie Parnell, says all but three photos were taken legally, under a section of the Oranga Tamariki Act.
In one case, a 15-year-old Māori was told if he didn't get his photo taken he would have to be taken back into the station.
Manukau barrister, Kingi Snelgar, told Meriana Johnsen that this isn't legal.
