An earthquake of magnitude 6.9 struck off the coast of the New Britain region in Papua New Guinea, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said on Saturday.
The quake was at a depth of 49km, EMSC said.
The US Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning, saying waves of one to three metres above the tide level were possible along some coasts of Papua New Guinea and smaller waves - of less than a third of a metre - could hit the coasts of Solomon Islands
The warning has since been lifted, officials saying based on all available data, the threat from the earthquake had passed.
But minor sea fluctuations may continue for a few hours, they said, and people should remain observant.
