A man who repeatedly stabbed another man with a pair of scissors in an apparent road-rage attack at a Christchurch intersection, leaving him critically injured, has been jailed for three years.
Avishek Chaudhary, 26, was sentenced at the Christchurch District Court on Friday, after being convicted of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm for attacking the man at a Riccarton intersection last September.
The court heard a car pulled up next to Chaudhary's at a red light at the corner of Clarence Street and Blenheim Road, with passengers rapping loudly to a song. When Chaudhary asked if they had a problem, the occupants told him they were just singing along.
He became more aggressive, before Chaudhary and the victim agreed to a fight and got out of their cars.
Chaudhary pulled a pair of scissors from his glove box and started swinging towards the man's face, before stabbing him and driving off.
Chaudhary's lawyer, Matt Smitt, noted his client turned himself into police and described the stabbing as a "brain snap".
The court heard Chaudhary's victim did not know he had a weapon when he agreed to fight and his attacker "let his anger get the better of him".
In outlining the impact on the injured man, judge Stephen O'Driscoll said the day of the stabbing marked a turning point in his life. He said the man lived in pain, with deep emotional scars and a sense of fear.
Chaudhary kept his head down during his sentencing, while his mother and other family members sat in the public gallery.
