Mererangi Paul has been called up by the Black Ferns as an injury replacement for Amy du Plessis as they prepare for their Rugby World Cup semi-final against Canada in Bristol.

Du Plessis injured her shoulder in New Zealand's first match against Spain and has since been ruled out of the tournament.

Her departure and injury concerns over midfielders Sylvia Brunt and Theresa Setefano had left Stacey Waaka as the only fit centre, but versatile outside back Paul will help alleviate the crisis.

Second five-eighth Setefano failed a head injury assessment during the 46-17 quarterfinal win over South Africa on Sunday morning and is likely to be ruled out under World Rugby's mandatory 12-day minimum stand-down protocols, while Brunt has suffered delayed symptoms from her second head knock at the tournament, during the final pool match against Ireland.

Paul has played 12 Tests for the Black Ferns, making her debut against Australia two years ago. She was a nominee for World Rugby Breakthrough Player of the Year in 2023.

"We're all feeling for Amy as she leaves the squad, but she can be extremely proud of the contribution she's made to our campaign, and we've made sure she's felt our support over the past 24 hours," Black Ferns coach Alan Bunting said.

"At the same time, it's a special moment for Mererangi and her whānau for her to get the call and we will welcome her into the squad. She's a talented Black Fern who has Test match experience and covers the midfield. She will bring a lot to the environment."
