The opening one day international between the White Ferns and Sri Lanka was washed out in Napier.
After winning the toss and deciding to bowl first New Zealand were in a good position having Sri Lanka 147 for five in the 37th over when the rain started to fall.
Debutante Bree Illing had taken two wickets while Jess Kerr and Suzie Bates had taken one each.
Harshitha Samarawickrama was unbeaten on 66.
The next two games are in Nelson on Friday and Sunday.
They will be followed by three T20 internationals.
