New Zealand, without several of their frontline players that featured in the Rugby World Cup triumph, were edged 26-19 by their trans-Tasman rivals in the tournament decider in Dubai.
Trailing 14-12 at halftime, the Black Ferns conceded a further two tries to fall 14 points behind, with Michaela Blyde completing her hat-trick with a consolation try in injury time.
The New Zealand men's team had to settle for bronze after letting a second half lead slip and conceding a try after the fulltime siren in their semifinal against South Africa.
A 31-12 win over the United States secured New Zealand third place.
South Africa won the men's title, beating Ireland 21-5 in the Cup final.
The men's and women's teams now head for Cape Town for next weekend's second round of the World Series.
