Hiddink had a caretaker spell in charge at Stamford Bridge in 2009 and Chelsea won the FA Cup under his care.

He will take charge until the end of the season.

Hiddink has been out of work since being fired as Netherlands national coach in June.

"I am excited to return to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in the world but is not where it should be at the moment. However, I am sure we can all turn this season around," Hiddink said in a club statement.

After winning the Premier League seven months ago, Chelsea is now only one point above the relegation zone.

Hiddink is best known in Australasia for coaching the Socceroos to the 2006 World Cup.
