About thirty people are protesting the presence of major weapons companies at Parliament on Friday.

Representatives from Lockheed Martin, Pratt and Whitney and Bell Textron are at an aviation symposium in the Grand Hall.

The event's stated focus is on the role of aviation and the role aerospace sectors have to play in growing the economy, through both supporting others and being a direct revenue generator.

"This year's symposium will explore the sector's requirements, what the sector is doing for itself and what the projections are for the future," Aero Society's information page said.

Peace Action Wellington has organised a 'noise protest' on Parliament's lawn to disrupt the event - banging pots and pans and letting off ear-splitting sirens.

Protestor Valerie Morse told the group arms companies had no place in Parliament.

"We can think of nothing scarier than a bunch of arms dealers having free reign in Parliament and that is exactly what is going on," she said.

"What we always say is, 'arms trade, death trade' and today we're going to add 'keep space for peace' because this is an aeronautical conference."
