Emergency services have cleared the scene of a serious crash involving a truck and a van in the Far North that left at least a dozen people injured.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Lamb Road, near the town of Pukenui, about 7.45am on Tuesday.

Hato Hone St John said it looked at and treated 13 people in conditions ranging from minor to serious.

Health New Zealand Te Tai Tokerau group director of operations Alex Pimm said the most critical patients were being airlifted to Whangārei Hospital while others would be treated in Kaitaia.

"Our teams are managing the situation, and additional staff have been called in to support patient care as a contingency measure until we have triaged all patients in hospital and can understand any on-going care and treatment needs."

St John said in total, eight units were sent to the scene.

The units consisted of three ambulances, one first response unit, one operations manager and three helicopters.

Of the 13 patients, eight were taken to Kaitaia Hospital by ambulance. Four were moderately injured and another four had minor injuries.

A further four patients were airlifted to Whangārei Hospital - two in serious condition and two in moderate condition.

One other person with minor injuries was treated at the scene - but did not need to go to hospital.
