Several of the country's high-profile mayors have been re-elected and some Māori wards scrapped in this year's local elections.
Voting closed at midday Saturday, with results based on preliminary counts trickling out through the afternoon.
Auckland's Wayne Brown romped home easily for a second term running the Super City, while mayors in Rotorua, Gore, Nelson, Christchurch and many other centres kept their jobs.
A few have lost their roles, most notably so far Dunedin's Jules Radich, Napier's Kirsten Wise and Upper Hutt's Wayne Guppy.
Former Labour Party leader Andrew Little comfortably won the Wellington mayoralty.
