Emergency services are responding to a serious crash that has blocked State Highway 8 at Shingle Creek, north of Roxburgh in Central Otago.
Police said they were alerted to the crash, which happened between Waikaia Bush Road and Eliot Road, at about 7.20am.
The crash involved one vehicle, which left the road and crashed down a 25m bank, police said.
One person suffered serious injuries and was being airlifted to hospital.
Police are advising motorists to expect delays.
