A person has been seriously hurt in a police pursuit in Auckland's New Windsor.

Police confirmed a vehicle crashed on Boundary Road shortly after officers initiated a pursuit just before 7.30pm on Thursday.

A spokesperson for St John's said the person - which RNZ understands to be the driver of the vehicle - was transported to Auckland hospital following the crash.

The vehicle has been confirmed as stolen by police who say the driver will be facing charges.

An eyewitness, Kelly Avaiki, told RNZ she was with her children waiting on some laundry when she heard the van driving down the road "at speed".

"A loud skid and a big crash happened".

She said the driver was in visible pain and screaming about his injured leg

The driver suffered a leg injury and police supported him "trying to keep him calm".

Firefighters were called in to cut him out of the van.
