Court documents have revealed the final moments before a man was fatally shot in Auckland last year.

Matthew Lemalu pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of 50-year-old Anthony Rangi in the High Court at Auckland on Wednesday morning.

He had previously been charged with murder.

Court documents show in August, Rangi drove to a commercial property in Onehunga, parking out front at 9.45pm.

CCTV footage captured Rangi behaving "somewhat erratically," court documents said.

Lemalu was inside a residential apartment above the commercial property at the time, armed with a gun.

He had yelled at Rangi from the upstairs window of the apartment, telling him to go away.

Lemalu went to the door, opening it slightly and watching as Rangi rummaged in his car boot.

"Mr Rangi subsequently walked towards the door with something behind his back (which Police and Mr Lemalu later learnt was a metal crowbar)," court documents said.

Lemalu pointed a gun at Rangi as he walked to the door, telling him to "f*** off".

Rangi stopped and put his hands in the air, revealing the crowbar.

Lemalu shot Rangi in the upper thigh at close range.

He was given first aid by an associate, as well as by emergency responders, however he died at the scene.

Lemalu left the scene in a vehicle from the scene moments later.

Lemalu pleaded guilty to a charge of manslaughter before Justice Mathew Downs and a packed public gallery.

He will be sentenced in October.
