Police are searching for a shooter at large, after a serious firearms incident in the suburb of Chartwell in Hamilton on Wednesday evening.

Police were called to a house on Bellmont Avenue around 6.40pm, where they say a gun had been fired.

Police said the alleged offender left the scene, and they are searching for him with the assistance of the police helicopter.

Police would not confirm if there had been any injuries or deaths.

St John ambulance said it responded with one rapid response unit and one operations manager, but both had left the scene before 10pm. It also would not provide information on injuries.

A local resident, who did not want to be named, earlier said she saw about six to 10 armed police and four to five police cars around the corner of Comries Road and Bellmont Road.

She said a helicopter had been circling since around 8pm.

The resident said when she approached police to ask about what was going on, an officer told her it was a "dangerous" situation and asked her to leave.

A large police presence is in the area and members of the public are urged to call 111 if they see any suspicious activity.
