Faulty sewers may have played a role in the full-scale evacuation of a Wellington sports centre on Saturday afternoon.
The Ākau Tangi Sports Centre in Kilbirnie was closed around 12.45pm after a suspected gas leak.
All sports games were immediately cancelled and dozens of players, supporters and centre staff were asked to leave.
It re-opened to the public at 4pm after the building was investigated by fire crews.
The lead agency, Fire and Emergency (FENZ), ruled out a gas leak but a spokesperson said a slight odour was originally detected. This had dissipated before the building reopened, they added.
A council spokesperson said the issue "seems to have been related to sewers" and Wellington City Council would investigate further in the next few days.
Wellington Free Ambulance said it treated four patients "in a minor condition" on the scene, and no one needed to be taken to hospital.
