A crash between a truck and a pedestrian has closed State Highway 1 at Peketā, south of Kaikōura.
Emergency services were called to the scene, between Inland Kaikōura Road and Rakanui Road, shortly before 9.30am.
The Serious Crash Unit was notified and the road was expected to be closed for some time in both directions.
Police said motorists should instead use the inland route, via Mt Lyford.
