The search for an offender is underway after a person was seriously injured outside a business on Settlement Road, police say.

Detective Senior Sergeant Michele Gillespie said the man fled on foot across Settlement Road and was last seen near an address.

The assault forced nearby schools in lockdown.

A St John spokesperson said they had transport one person to Middlemore Hospital in a serious condition after an assault about 11:40am.

There'll be an increased police presence in the area as officers work to locate the person responsible.

"Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of what has occurred today, including locating the offender," Gillespie said.

Papakura Intermediate and Papakura High School both went into lockdown as a result. The lockdowns have since been lifted.

Papakura High School said "staff will be out and about in the school grounds to reassure any students who need it".

Earlier on Friday another Auckland school was placed into lockdown. That incident has been resolved.
