A man has been arrested after a spree of Lego thefts across the upper North Island since the start of the year.

Police have been investigating since January, saying retailers in Whangārei, Auckland, and Te Rapa have been targeted.

Officers believe highly valuable Lego were either stolen or had their barcodes altered.

They searched a property on Wednesday in Te Atatū South in Auckland and have arrested a 39-year-old man.

He is charged with seven counts of obtaining by deception and three counts of theft.

The man was currently before the Waitākere District Court.

Sergeant Julian Conder said police were able to recover all of the stolen Lego during the search warrant.

"At the end of the day it will mean that these pieces will be available for those who are willing to pay for their goods," he said.
