Wellington trains now departing after signal issues stopped services

The signal issues that stopped trains from arriving and leaving in Wellington have now been cleared, Metlink says.

The issues arose during peak travel time on Wednesday evening affecting Kapiti, Melling, Wairarapa and Hutt Valley trainlines.

Metlink said no services could arrive to or depart from Wellington Station during the major signal and track issues.

An RNZ reporter at the station said a PA announcement had been made advising passengers that it was a power outage that caused the signal issues.

Metlink advised people to seek alternative transport options if possible, but there were also limited buses on the way.

It also advises affected passengers at Wellington Station listen out to PA announcements for any platform changes and updates.

KiwiRail said the intermittent signals fault at Wellington Train Station had caused delays to services in and out of the Station, for approximately an hour.

"Our signals technicians are on site and have now resolved the issue, however there may be some delays as the backlog of services clear," a KiwiRail spokesperson said.

KiwiRail apologised for any disruption the fault had caused.

"For updated information on prospective delays, please visit the Metlink website, or follow any text alerts."
