New Zealand First's leader has conceded the coalition government will be late to meet its police recruitment target.
In their coalition deal the National Party and New Zealand First agreed that by November they would have increased the number of police officers in the force by 500.
But police bosses have said that target would be challenging and that a mid-2026 goal would likely be "more accurate".
Winston Peters said they would ensure their party's promise to deliver 500 new officers would be fulfilled.
