A homicide in Napier has come as a shock to some residents, with one not thinking much of noises she had heard until she woke up to police in the neighbourhood.

A homicide investigation was launched on Sunday in Onekawa the death of a teenage boy.

The boy was found critically injured at an address on Alexander Avenue in the morning and died at the scene.

Police believe a disorder event involving a group of people on Dinwiddie Avenue could be linked.

Nearby resident Deborah said she had heard some loud music and noise in the area around midnight but didn't think much of it until she woke the next morning to see officers and "little cones" all over the road.

"I asked the policeman what was going on but was told to touch nothing and to stay inside and so I spent the whole day at home," Deborah said.

She said police with white jumpsuits and detectives were looking around the area all day.

Cordons were placed at the intersections of Hitchings Avenue and Alexander Avenue, Dinwiddie Avenue and Wallis Place, and Alexander Avenue, near Dinwiddie Avenue, due to the scene examination.

Deborah said the cordons meant she wasn't able to spend her Mother's Day with her mother and daughter as planned, but she took it in her stride.

" just thought well, this is what's gonna happen to let them do their job and hopefully find out who who caused all the mayhem."

Deborah said it was a terrible thing to happen and she felt for the family affected.

Nelson Park ward councillor Greg 'Grego' Mawson who lives nearby said it was an extremely tragic event.

Mawson said what happened was "horrendous and unacceptable".

"My heart goes out to the family and hopefully the police can apprehend the assailants," he said.

Police were still investigating and urgently wanted to hear from anyone who was in the area, or who took photos or video of the altercation on Dinwiddie Avenue.

They have appealed for anyone with information to make a report online or call 105, quoting reference number 250511/1317.

Information can also be provided anonymously on 0800 555 111.
