State Highway 29 over the Kaimai Ranges reopened to all traffic on Saturday morning.
The main road between Bay of Plenty and Waikato had been closed by a slip between Te Poi and Tauriko on Friday evening.
Bay of Plenty was under a severe thunderstorm warning on Friday night, and intense bursts of heavy rain fell in the region.
The closure resulted in a detour that added an extra 90 minutes to the journey.
A severe thunderstorm warning issued for Auckland was lifted after a significant "short, sharp" downpour hit the city after 5pm. There were multiple crashes across the city's motorway network as the rain came down.
As of Saturday morning, there were no weather watches or warnings from MetService across the whole country.
