Two people have died in separate car crashes in North Canterbury on Tuesday.
Emergency services first responded to a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 7 since just after 3pm.
One person died at the scene, while two others were flown to Christchurch Hospital with serious and moderate injuries, St John said.
The road, which runs through the Lewis Pass, was closed between Culverden and Balmoral with diversions in place.
Emergency services then responded to another serious crash in the region.
A single-vehicle crash on State Highway 1 near Leithfield happened about 5.15pm.
One person has since died.
State Highway 1 is open, however the entrance to Mays Road is closed while the Serious Crash Unit examines the scene.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible.
