Police are investigating after being alerted to footage of a bus driving in the wrong lane into oncoming traffic in Wellington on Tuesday.

Jonathan Foley, who shared the footage, said he was driving on Broderick Road in Johnsonville just after 6pm when a Metlink bus pulled out from the opposite lane at the intersection with Moorefield Road.

The video taken from the dashcam of the car behind Foley showed him being forced to swerve to avoid the number 1 bus as it crossed well over the centre line.

"It was very scary. I was confused and thought I was in the wrong originally," he said.

"The bus didn't even slow down one bit."

It was a rainy evening and visibility was poor, Foley said.

Police said they were making enquiries, including working with Metlink to follow up with the driver.

Metlink group manager Samantha Gain said Metlink was working with the bus operator and police to investigate and "take appropriate action".
