A man is dead after being found unresponsive in the water at a beach on Auckland's North Shore.

Hato Hone St John said it was notified of a water incident at Red Beach at about 7.45am on Tuesday. Two ambulances, an operations manager and a helicopter attended.

Police later confirmed the death.

An outrigger was reported overturned in water at 7.27am. Police, with the Eagle helicopter soon found the man, already unresponsive.

Police were now trying to recover the outrigger. An inquiry into the man's death will be conducted on behalf of the coroner.

A Stanmore Bay resident said the conditions were rough near Red Beach this morning.

Cherie Muller said she learned someone had died at the beach while walking her dog in the area.

She was shocked to see the rescue helicopter land on a football field at the nearby Stanmore Bay Beach and a body being taken away in an ambulance.

"It's very sad.

"It was a man that was in a boat that had capsized. Locals found him at about 7:30am and pulled him up onto the rocks.

"The water was really choppy this morning too. Not good conditions to be out in at all."

She said it was the second time there had been a death near the beach in recent years.
