The last of the bad weather is over, MetService says, after two days of severe weather alerts.

Heavy rain battered the North Island and the top of the South throughout Friday.

The last of the rain warnings - for Bay of Plenty east of Whakatāne, and Gisborne north of Ruatoria - were lifted at 6am on Saturday.

Meteorologist Kgolofelo Dube said the worst of the rain eased off there around 2am, and on Saturday fine weather was expected in those parts, as well as Coromandel.

"We will see sunshine… becoming even clearer from the afternoon."

She told RNZ the whole country would see more settled weather, with cloudy skies and some isolated or scattered showers coming through in the parts.

"In terms of the severe weather alerts today, we have none, and it seems pretty much settled compared to the past couple of days."

In a post on Bluesky, MetService said North Islanders should "expect a few showers in places, especially in the south and east", while in the South it would be "mostly cloudy, with a few showers in places throughout the day".

"Strong winds and heavy rains" might come in on Sunday thanks to a low passing across the country, but MetService said there was minimal risk that warnings would be required.

Northland Civil Defence said people in the region should drive with care with some trees down across roads after heavy rain and wind overnight.

Local Emergency Management chair Kelly Stratford said there was also some flooding, but it was accompanied by a high tide and "receded quickly".

Stratford, also Far North deputy mayor, said the weather was "fairly minor" compared to Cyclone Gabrielle - but it had still been unsettling for those in areas that have had successive storms and floods.

Stratford said local residents should report flooded roads and trees down across council roads to 0800 920 029.
