A man has been caught stealing over $2200 worth of Pokémon cards in Taupō.

Police were called to a store on Tuwharetoa Street at 9.50pm Tuesday after a reported break in.

The thief had smashed a glass panel to gain entry and placed Pokémon trading cards into bags.

A member of the public witnessed the burglary and called police who tracked the man to a nearby bar.

Police arrested a 35-year-old man and charged him with burglary, shoplifting and resisting police.

He will appear in court on Wednesday.

The man is also suspected of stealing $500 worth of Pokémon cards from the same store in November.
