Police in Northland have rescued two teenage girls swept away by strong currents at Waitangi Wharf yesterday.
The Maritime Unit had been returning to the wharf at about 3.30pm when they noticed the teenagers struggling to keep afloat in the water.
Both teens had been part of a group of 20 kids jumping into the water, when they found themselves out of their depth and were pulled about 300 metres from the wharf.
Sergeant Jesse Jenden said none of the group noticed the girls had been swept away.
"It was obvious they were struggling," he said.
"Another few minutes and it could have been a different result."
Jenden said both teens were fully clothed and wearing crocs, which would have restricted their ability to swim.
"I guess it was a case of being in the right place at the right time, and I'm glad we were there to help," he said.
