MetService has now lifted the severe thunderstorm warning for the Gisborne area.
The severe thunderstorms were moving towards the east-northeast, and had been expected to lie near Tolaga Bay, Waimata, Kanakanaia and Tauwhareparae.
These thunderstorms had been expected to be accompanied by torrential rain and hail, MetService said.

A severe thunderstorm watch is still in place for Gisborne and Hawke's Bay until 10pm Saturday.
