The search for a missing swimmer at Piha Beach has been stood down for the evening and is expected to resume on Wednesday, police said.

Police were alerted by Surf Lifesaving New Zealand after a group of swimmers got into difficulty just after 4pm.

They said five swimmers were rescued and a sixth member of the group could not be located.

Coastguard said they were not responding to the incident but search efforts were ongoing to locate the man.

The Police Eagle helicopter had also deployed to assist with aerial-based searches.

Coastguard said its air patrol would also assist search efforts.

St John said it responded and no patients required transporting.
