The film studio is unhappy the cleaning firm has used the name of the animated characters featured in the movies Despicable Me and Minions, and has included images of the little yellow men in its advertising.
Universal has given the Christchurch company 14 days to stop using the name and the images or potentially face legal action.
Minions and Me Cleaning owner Bridgit Veenings said she was happy to remove the little yellow men from her website and the side of her van, but could not see why she should have to change her company's name.
She said she registered the name before the movies came out and no red flags were raised.
"We specialise in builder's claims, move-outs and hoarders - we're not the movie. Nobody thinks that little round yellow people are going to turn up to do their cleaning."
Ms Veenings said the word minions had been around a lot longer than any of the movies and she should be able to use it.
