National electricity grid operator Transpower has been fined $65,000 by the regulator for what it calls a moderate level of negligence.

The Electricity Rulings Panel said the breach was severe enough to warrant a fine.

The panel found human error in the management of a low hydro storage situation in the lower South Island resulted in more expensive generation being dispatched to the market than was necessary.

The Electricity Authority estimated the error cost generators about $750,000, and purchasers nearly $2.96 million.

Transpower considered the cost estimates to be overstated, but has admitted the breach, which happened on 28 January 2022 and was not identified until 13 April 2022.
