Thousands are without power in parts of the West Kaipara area after high winds ripped through Northland on Thursday afternoon.

Northpower said 10 major lines were down and about 3200 customers were cut off across parts of West Kaipara.

It said some of those would be homes, and water pumps and cow sheds were also affected.

The area with the most concentrated outages is Mareretu - where over 1000 connections are down.

And in Whareora, east of Whangārei, about 132 homes are without power after a tree smashed into a power pole.

Northpower said crews were working on restoring the network, but it was unclear when power would back.

At 8pm, Northpower said 1680 customers remain without power in Northland.

Customers should expect to be without power for much of the evening, it said.

Earlier this afternoon, a roof lifted off a Northland home and a truck and trailer flipped near Dargaville.

FENZ said it had attended to six incidents, mostly relating to downed trees and power lines.

A strong wind watch is in place for the part of Northland north of Whangārei, until 9pm tonight.

Auckland Emergency Management said it was checking with council hydrologists amid concerns over rising levels of the Kumeū River in the northwest of Rodney.

It hasn't had any alerts but was asking Kumeū, Huapai and Taupaki residents whose properties were near the river, or prone to flooding, to check their emergency plans and remain vigilant.

It said people should go to higher ground immediately if they saw rapidly rising floodwater, and never drive or walk through floodwaters as they might contain hidden hazards.
