An expert in AI in education is concerned many students are using the technology without being fully aware of the consequences and pitfalls.
A programme to help New Zealand students become more competent and aware when using AI is being rolled out nationally this week.
'The Day of AI' began in the US at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is being adapted here, including a te ao Māori perspective.
It can be taught in one day, or rolled out over four hour-long, or eight half-hour lessons encompassing science, maths, social sciences and ethics.
Susana Tomaz is the New Zealand programme coordinator, she is also a teacher, and Westlake Girls' High School's director of futures and AI strategy.
