Wage subsidy prevented dramatic unemployment rise - economists

Economists believe the huge wage subsidy program will have prevented a dramatic rise in the unemployment rate when new figures are released this morning.

The June quarter numbers mark the first official labour data to include the lockdown period.

ASB bank has predicted the rate of unemployment jumped to 6.4 percent in the three months to the end of June.
