While Kate Sheppard is usually the first name that comes to mind in the New Zealand women's suffrage movement, there is a less well known Nelson woman who was also a pioneer for women's rights.
Mary Ann Muller wrote articles for Nelson's influential Examiner Newspaper under a pseudonym, because her husband did not approve, 30 years before Kate Sheppard Started the Women's Christian Temperance Union.
Mary Gavin is a great fan of Mary Ann Muller and is on the Board of the National Council for Women.
