Critter of the Week: The New Zealand Backswimmer

From Afternoons, 3:35 pm on 6 June 2025

Meet the Frostfish! This beautiful iridescent silver fish is found all over the world, but are also native to our waters.

They are known for stranding on beaches after especially frosty nights, hence the name! These long silver ribbons are ambush predators, hanging vertically in the water column with their mouths ready to snap at the nearest unsuspecting prey. Their incredible mirror finish and flattened bodies allow them to be camouflaged, reflecting the water around them making them nearly invisible.
