Celebrated journalist and broadcaster Guyon Espiner will return to a regular slot on RNZ National in the New Year as presenter of Midday Report. He will replace Charlotte Cook who will take on the new role of Field Correspondent.

Espiner has just wrapped up Context, a political history podcast he co-hosts with Corin Dann, and is in production for the fourth series of 30 with Guyon Espiner, set to launch on Wednesday with the first of six episodes. He previously co-hosted Morning Report and has been part of RNZ’s In Depth team for the past six years, producing documentaries, podcasts and written investigations.

Espiner said he’s looking forward to returning to live broadcasting after focusing on other projects for the best part of a decade.

“Being an election year, 2026 will be an important year for New Zealanders. I can’t wait to get back into the studio and ask the questions we all have about the main stories of the day.”

Chief Audio Officer Pip Keane says Midday Report has long provided a comprehensive summary of news, business, sports and rural reports and is appointment listening for many New Zealanders and the addition of such an experienced broadcaster and journalist to the show demonstrated how seriously RNZ was taking the midday hour.

“We will be making sure this hour is even more relevant to our audiences in 2026, led by Guyon’s presenting experience and superior interviewing skills, and making good use of all of RNZ’s reporting strength.”

Midday Report will return for 2026 on Monday 26 January, following summer programming on RNZ National.
