An academic in Fiji believes that Pacific labour mobility schemes to New Zealand could be improved to benefit island workers more.
The University of the South Pacific's professor of development studies Vijay Naidu says while it is good that labour schemes are offered, there are still gaps.
He says improvements could include better support for workers, extending the sector to include caregiving and allowing more small island states to participate.
Speaking at this month's Pacific Labour mobility panel at the University of Auckland, Professor Naidu told Sara Vui-Talitu that his interest stems from research on the indentured labour movement to Fiji.
